ADD: Top 5 Disney Pizzas

Average Disney Dude: Top 5 Disney Pizzas

Nothing says good times like pizza. It's fun, portable and, for the most part, great for the entire family. They come in many shapes and sizes with an infinite number of topping combinations.

Pizza originated in Italy from Neapolitan cuisine. The oven-baked, flat, disc-shaped bread is typically topped with a tomato sauce, cheese and various toppings. The dish has become popular in many parts of the world but like many other foods the make up of the toppings and crust vary from region to region. Due to the wide influence of Italian and Greek immigrants in American culture, the US has developed regional forms of pizza, some bearing only a casual resemblance to the Italian original. Chicago has its own style of a deep-dish pizza, Detroit also has it's unique twice-baked style, with cheese all the way to the crust, wheras New York City has developed its own distinct variety of thin crust pizza.

Without any further ado I present to you this month's list of my Top 5 Disney Pizzas. As they say in Italy, "Buon appetito" (have a good meal)!

#5 All Star Pizza Delivery and Pick-up - All Star Resort, Walt Disney World

If you're too tired to trek to the Food Court, All-Star Pizza Delivery will deliver a variety of pizzas to your room, along with salads, sandwiches, dessert, beer, wine and soft drinks. Hours are 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. There is a minimum food order and a delivery fee and an service charge will be applied. Alternatively, you can skip the add-on charges and get a pie to go from the Food Court Pizza Station (open 4 p.m. to midnight). A pick-up window across from the Beverage Island makes it easy.

It's not the best pizza in the world but it is convenient and filling. The service charge and delivery fees make me want to walk on over and pick it up and I'm sure you'll agree with me. If you're staying at the Caribbean Beach Resort and have a craving for a pizza you should call Blue Runner Pizza Delivery.

#4 Chef Mickey's Breakfast Pizza - Chef Mickey's, Disney's Contemporary Resort

Pizza for breakfast? Oh yeah! It's basically a simple cheesy omelet on a pizza crust but it's yummy. It's different and fun and it's made by Mickey himself... well one of his cooks anyway.

Speaking of cooks, how about a video of Kristen of Cooking with Mickey showing you how to make it?

#3 Wood Burning Oven Pizza - Portobello's, Downtown Disney

Portobello's menu was born from the bounty of the Italian countryside, as selected by a trio of noted chefs, including the James Beard award-winning Tony Mantauno. Patterned after a classic osteria, the restaurant lets Guests indulge in a dining experience that celebrates the simplest, most vivid flavors of Italy. Their pizzas are just as impressive. Choose from the following: Tuscan Salumi (pepperoni with tomato, mozzarella $12.95), Quattro Formaggi (mozzarella, gorgonzola, parmigiano, fontina, sun dried tomatoes $10.95), and the Margherita (tomato sauce, mozzarella, basil $9.95).

#2 Authentic Neoplitan Pizza - Naples Ristorante e Pizzeria, Downtown Disney - Disneyland Resort

The authentic soul of Southern Italy in the heart of Downtown Disney, Naples provides a fun, casual environment in which to enjoy delicious thin-crust pizzas and a full menu of regional Italian specialties. Naples is owned by the Patina Group, the same company that owns and operates Via Napoli at Epcot. Their pizza offerings are very similar, however there are a few pizzas that are unique to this location: The Americana (green peppers, mushrooms, red onions, black olives, sausage and pepperoni), Pollo (roasted chicken, B.B.Q. sauce, smoked mozzarella, caramelized onion and fresh tomatoes) and my favorite, Pancetta e Ananas (roasted fresh pineapple, crispy pancetta, tomato sauce and fresh mozzarella).

Naples was recently named one of the top pizzerias in Orange County by Haute Living! In addition all Disneyland Annual Pass holders receive 10% off entire check (excluding alcoholic beverages) when the AP is presented! Bonus!

#1 Wood Fired Authentic Pizza Napoletana - Via Napoli, Epcot World Showcase

Having been to Italy several times the experience of eating the pizza at Via Napoli is truly authentic and is arguably the BEST PIZZA I'VE EVER ATE! The pizza unlike those common place pizzas we eat in the states. The ingredients are of the highest quality with Caputo flour imported from Naples, San Marzano tomatoes, handmade fior di latte mozzarella, water identical to the water found in Naples, to make the pizza as authentic and delicious as that found on the streets of Naples. Let's not forget those killer wood fired pizza ovens!

Try my one of my favorites, the Margherita (tomato, mozzarella, basil) or Build Your Own Pizza. Choose from the following sizes: Individual $16, Large $28 (serves 2 - 3), Mezzo Metro $39 (serves 3 - 5). Toppings are $2.00 each: Eggplant, Italian Spicy Sausage, Fontina Cheese, Pepperoni, Prosciutto, Red Peppers, Artichokes, Olives, Anchovies, Mushrooms, Onions, Zucchini, Parma Cotto Ham, Arugula, Chicken Sausage.

Take a look at this video with Via Napoli Chef Charlie Restivo pizza man extraordinaire. He shares the restaurant’s secrets – the water; imported flour tomatoes and cheese; and hand-stretching the dough. And his pizza is crisp in two minutes – with the ovens cranked up over 700°F that’s still surprisingly quick.

Signature Pies also comes in the same three sizes. Quattro Stagioni (eggplant, artichokes, prosciutto, mushrooms), Funghi (portobello, crimini mushrooms), Pepperoni (pepperoni, tomato, mozzarella), Ortolano (tomato, mozzarella, vegetables), my all-time favorite - Quattro Formaggi (mozzarella, parmesan, fontina, provolone), and finally the Prosciutto e Melone (fontina, mozzarella, prosciutto, cantelope).

I hope you've enjoyed this month's Top 5 list! As usual please leave some comments about your favorite Disney pizzas below. I look forward to meeting you in person at the Sorcerer Radio 10th Anniversary Event.  Until next time, keep it real!
