Mission Tortilla Factory Out, Ghirardelli Soda Fountain In

The Mission Tortilla Factory which was one of the Disney California Adventure opening day offerings in 2001, after 10 years has closed it's doors. The Mission Tortilla Factory offered it's visitors free samples of the tortillas they were making, recipes and interesting exhibits. In addition on your birthday you could received a bag of free tortillas.

It is being replaced by Ghirardelli Soda Fountain, a very famous waterfront chocolate factory in San Francisco. Currently, there is one located in Downtown Disney in Walt Disney World. Imagineers are planning to make this building's exterior a replica of the one located in San Francisco with red brick and stone, including the clock tower that has been on San Francisco Bay since 1923. They too will offer a factory tour experience in addition to serving their tasty chocolate treats and soda fountain drinks. Here's to hoping for some free samples of the chocolate!

I have to say that I'm a little sad to see the Mission Tortilla Factory close as it was something that I really enjoyed on my first visit to Disneyland Resort in 2009. I was hoping to visit it again on this trip. However, I can see Ghirardelli being more popular as it will be located near Cars Land and is on the parade route so I'm sure many people will be stopping in to grab something sweet and tasty to have while watching the parade. I am however looking forward to seeing how well they do at making it look like the one in San Francisco, which I have seen.

So what do you think of the closing of the Mission Tortilla Factory? Are you going to miss it or are you happy to see Ghirardelli bring it's sweet creations to Disney California Adventure?

  1. DEFINITELY going to miss the Mission Tortilla Factory as it's something we did almost every single time we were in DCA, but I'm also excited to see the new soda fountain and I think it has a lot of potential.

    Onward and upward! :)
